Studio E Architects - High Tech High Chula Vista in Chula Vista, California Print E-mail
Thursday, 02 June 2011 10:20

High-Tech-High-Chula-Vista_Jim-Brady-9Photo credit : Jim Brady Architectural Photography Recently selected as one of the 2011 COTE Top Ten Green Projects by the American Institute of Architects, the High Tech High Chula Vista is a public charter school serving 550 students in grades 9 to 12 with an approach rooted in project-based learning. Owned and occupied by HTH Learning, a nonprofit corporation, the school fosters student engagement by knowing students well, tapping into student experience and interests, and building a strong sense of community. Through internships and projects based in the community, students collaborate with adults on work with meaning that extends well beyond the school walls.

Located in Chula Vista, California, High Tech High is at the center of one of the most economically and culturally diverse zones in the United States, just seven miles south of downtown San Diego and seven miles north of the US/Mexico border's busiest port of entry. The school takes advantage of this unique context to randomly select students in a way that ensures diversity. Coupled with a lack of ability groupings within the school, it is both diverse and integrated.

BNIM - Greensburg Schools/Kiowa County Schools Print E-mail
Tuesday, 31 May 2011 07:52

Kiowa-County-Schools_Assassi_03Photograph ©Farshid Assassi We continue the coverage of the AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Projects with this community oriented green school, set with a rural environment. The community of Greensburg, Kansas was nearly destroyed by an F5 tornado on the evening of May 4, 2007. All school facilities were lost in the devastation. The school district made a strategic decision to combine all its facilities into a single location to consolidate functions for greater efficiency.

This decision was driven by the desire to create the best learning environments, to keep the identity of the three age-appropriate facilities (elementary, middle, and high) within a single building, and to do so with a focus on creating the best long-term facility based on life-cycle cost.

During the design process, the decision was made to pursue LEED Platinum with a constant focus on creating the best daylight-filled educational environment to enhance student performance.

The site selection and the ultimate site development were also critical during the pre-design effort, as they placed the facility in the heart of town along Main Street, consistent with the City's comprehensive master plan. The design team worked closely with the district to select the site and to integrate the facility into the community fabric to establish a walkable community.

FREE | Fernando Romero EnterprisE - Museo Soumaya in Mexico City Print E-mail

Soumaya_complete2

Museo Soumaya that has just opened to the public in late March houses one of the most important art collections in Latin America with over 6,200 artworks and 60,000 square feet of exhibition space.

The Soumaya Museum is located in a former industrial zone dating from the 1940’s which today presents a very high real-estate potential. The Soumaya Museum should play a key role in the reconversion of the area; as a preeminent cultural landmark, it is sought upon as catalyst for changing the preconceived image of the neighborhood.

3XN - Middelfart Savings Bank in Middelfart, Denmark Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 May 2011 19:00
Middelfart-Savings-Bank-01
We are re-issuing an article we posted back last year about this project by 3XN that just won the 2011 Royal Institute of British Architect’s (RIBA) European Award. 3XN sent us for that occasion some new photographs that we added to our original article.

Middlefart is a small Danish town on the island of Fyn. Middelfart Savings Bank had high ambitions for its recently inaugurated head office. The building needed to ensure a perfect environment for the employees, while positively stressing demands for high architectural quality in the future development along the neighbouring harbour front.

3XN’s design is characterized by a large roof that covers all functions in the building. The roof is a large elegant wooden structure with 83 prism like skylights.
