Located in the center of Maribor, second largest city in Slovenia, OFIS arhitekti's recently completed project involved the transformation of an existing sport field into a football (soccer for us in North America) stadium that can host 12,500 spectators and all the related functions.
The stadium gets its architectural signature from a ring shaped concrete structure hosting the tribunes. The ring is shaped like a wave with the highest and lowest point defined according to the architects by the quality of the view towards the field. As the Architects describe it: “In the corners of the field, where the views are restricted, the entrances to the tribunes are displaced. The ring is pulled down here to the level of the entry plateau. Then it rises gently and it reaches the highest points in the middle of the field. There the maximum number of the seats is provided, offering the best views to the field. The corridor of the ring has double skin and is providing rooms for VIP, Press and refreshments.” Awarded after winning the competition back in 1998, construction only started in 2006.
