The architects had the sensitive, and honorable task of building a major new addition to Frank Lloyd Wright-designed National Historic Landmark Meeting House. Completed in 1951, the original Meeting House has been hailed as one of the world's most innovative examples of Church Architecture.
The gently curving arc of the new addition reflects back to the iconic Meeting House Image credit: The Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc. / Zane Williams Located in an urban, residential neighborhood near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, the First Unitarian Society attracts a large and diverse membership. In recent years, the First Unitarian Society of Madison has become one of the largest Unitarian congregations in the United States. This growth, along with ongoing architectural tours by visitors from around the world, has placed increasing demands on the original historic structure. While wishing to maintain the integrity of Wright's original design, the community wanted to provide space for expanded daily needs, and align construction with the congregation's deeply held environmental values.

Ofis Arhitekti - Farewell Chapel in Slovenia |

There is certain consistency about Ofis Arhitekti. We always get a pleasant surprise when we receive a new project from them. Although the building typology differs from one project to another, there is always a healthy dose of creativity and novelty that gets injected into each project.
Which brings me to this latest addition; a farewell chapel is located in a village close to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana.
A place that calls for serenity, as friends and families bid their last farewells to their dear departed.

3SIX0 Architecture & Design - Shepherd of the Valley Chapel in Hope, Rhode Island |
|
|
|
Friday, 30 January 2009 01:47 |
|
Shepherd of the Valley, a United Methodist Church in Hope, Rhode Island, hired 3six0 initially to prepare an assessment and feasibility study for their needs to expand. The church had grown and the existing building was no longer seen as being adequate in meeting the needs of worship, ministry, education and other activities. There was also an overall need for maintenance repair. Stan Mar buildings constructed the existing building in 1970, using pre-fabricated, vinyl-sided wood construction.
3six0 identified a formal origin for the current shape of the existing church as having a Basilican Plan, an external form with a deep gable and internally with a central nave and aisles—a formal type that goes back two millennia as the form for both churches and barns. Their study revealed pressing needs for a new education wing, restructured sanctuary end wall, reorganized entry and an overall renovation of the existing building’s exterior.

Trahan Architects - Holy Rosary Church Complex |

Trahan Architects wanted to relay the spiritual atmosphere of the church complex through its architecture. The project is an honest exploration of form, function, natural light and materials, providing an engaging and profound study in sacred space. The oratory is the focal point of its rural Roman Catholic campus, predominant by its unique placement and floating within the sacred precinct of a courtyard space.

Ross Barney Architects - Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation Synagogue |

|
Expected to be one of the first synagogues to obtain a LEED Platinum certification, this project located in the city of Evanston, Illinois, has just been inaugurated in February. The new synagogue for the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation replaces the old building at the edge of a residential area, across from a city park and the tracks of the Skokie Swift commuter train. The design balances the limitations of a small site with an ambitious program that uniformly promotes its worship, educational, and community objectives.
